When Faith Feels Small

Scripture Reading: Matthew 17:20
“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’”

Devotional

There are days when faith feels strong, steady, and unshakable—and then there are days when it feels small, fragile, and uncertain. Jesus reminds us that even mustard-seed faith, the tiniest measure, is enough to unlock God’s power.

A mustard seed is hardly noticeable when held in your hand, yet it holds potential to grow into something much larger than itself. That is how God views your faith. You may not always have mountain-sized confidence, but when you choose to trust Him—however small that trust may feel—you are planting seeds that He can water, nurture, and grow into something greater.

Mustard-seed moments are not about the size of your faith but the size of your God. A whispered prayer in the dark, a trembling “yes” when God calls you forward, or a simple act of obedience when you don’t see the outcome—these are seeds sown in the soil of His promises. He takes what feels small and breathes His power into it.

When the mountain in front of you feels unmovable—whether it’s fear, illness, grief, or uncertainty—remember that the strength to move it doesn’t rest in how much faith you can muster. It rests in the faithfulness of the One who holds the mountain in His hands.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life do you feel like your faith is “too small”?
  2. Can you think of a time when God took a small step of faith from you and turned it into something far greater?
  3. How might you offer even a mustard-seed prayer or act of trust today?

Prayer

Lord, I confess that sometimes my faith feels weak and small. Thank You for reminding me that even the tiniest seed of trust is enough for You to work with. Help me to place what little I have into Your hands, knowing You are able to do immeasurably more than I can see. Grow my faith, Lord, and teach me to trust You in every mustard-seed moment. Amen.
